Type or speak. The text input is the default; the microphone icon opens voice mode. Either way you'll see a confirmation card before anything is saved.
What it does — only two things
The assistant is deliberately limited in scope. Two jobs, no others:
- Log a stay from natural language. You say or type something like "I just left the Netherlands", "I arrived in Dubai this morning," or "Hey Sojourn, I just left the Netherlands on Emirates flight 148". The assistant parses the country, the direction (entry or exit), the date and time, and any supplementary context (a flight number, a meeting, a layover) — then presents a confirmation card. You tap Confirm and the stay is saved. You can edit any field first.
- Explain a country rule. You ask "How does the 183-day rule work for the Netherlands?" or "What counts as a transit day in the US?" — the assistant reads from the same country-rule data the rest of the app uses and explains in plain language. Every rule explanation cites the date the rule was last reviewed and links to the official source.
What it doesn't do
This bit matters as much as what it does do.
- It is not a tax advisor. It will not answer "am I a tax resident?", "should I leave the country before year-end?", or "will I be audited?" — those questions are deflected to a qualified professional.
- It does not invent rules, dates, treaties, or numbers. If the answer isn't in the country-rule data or your own stay log, the assistant tells you it doesn't know and points you to the official source or a tax advisor.
- It does not delete events. Edits and deletes happen in the regular UI — too easy for an AI to misparse and destroy a record.
- It does not save anything without you. Every logged stay shows a confirmation card with editable fields before it touches the database.
It also reads your boarding pass
Beyond text, the assistant has eyes. Snap a photo — or drop a screenshot of a mobile boarding pass — and Sojourn's vision AI reads the flight: departure and arrival airports, dates, times, flight number and airline. It works out which countries you left and entered, prefills the arrival, and even closes the trip you just departed. You just confirm and add the purpose. No typing, and no GPS needed — so it works on a screenshot of a pass you never printed.

Siri Shortcuts
During onboarding Sojourn offers pre-configured shortcuts. Say "Hey Siri, log a Sojourn entry" and Siri opens the app to the assistant with the right intent pre-filled. Hands-free in the jet bridge, hands-free in the cab.
ON ANDROID
Google Assistant Voice Actions
Same shape: "OK Google, log a Sojourn entry." Pre-defined verbs you can invoke without unlocking your phone.

Deflected: "I can explain how the UK Statutory Residence Test works, but I'm not a tax advisor. For decisions about your specific situation, please speak with a qualified tax professional."
What to expect
Speed
Most prompts return a confirmation card or answer in under 3 seconds. Voice transcription happens on your device first, then only the text is sent to the AI provider.
Quota
Pro Monthly includes 100 queries per month. Pro Annual includes 150 queries per month. The counter resets on the 1st of every calendar month. The current count is shown at the bottom of the assistant screen — "73 of 100 this month."
If you hit the quota before month-end, the assistant input is disabled with a calm note: "You've used your 100 Sojourn queries this month. They reset on 1 [Month]. Manual logging works as normal." No upsells, no top-up packs.
Privacy
The AI provider receives only the prompt you typed or spoke, plus a snapshot of the country-rule data needed to answer it. No name. No date of birth. No email. No stay history beyond what you mention in the prompt itself. Every request is stateless — the AI doesn't carry memory across queries. See the full privacy policy.
Voice handling
Speech-to-text runs on your phone's operating system. Raw audio is never transmitted off your device. Only the transcribed text is sent.
What happens when it gets something wrong
Every confirmation card is editable before you tap Confirm. If the assistant parsed the wrong date or country, you change it, then confirm. Nothing reaches the database without your explicit Confirm.
Reliability
If the AI provider is down or the network is unavailable, the assistant tells you and falls back to "log this stay manually" — your record-keeping is never blocked by a third-party outage.
Why the assistant exists
Tax-residency tracking has a friction problem. The moment you're most likely to forget a stay is the moment you're stepping off a plane, finding a taxi, getting to the hotel. By the time you remember, the date is fuzzy.
The assistant exists for those moments — say "Hey Siri, log a Sojourn entry" walking through the jet bridge, confirm the date that night. The record stays accurate because the friction stays low.
